Stoll, 87, of Pukwana, SD will be 2:00 pm Friday, April 26, 2019 at the Pukwana Lutheran Church in Pukwana. Burial of the ashes will be at a later date in the Pukwana Cemetery at Pukwana. Lyal Lewis Stoll was born June 4, 1931 to Howard Bernard and Venita Mary (Jorgenson) Stoll at the Fort Thompson Hospital in Old Fort Thompson, SD.
He attended school at Victory Country School north of Pukwana. He later obtained his diploma from Stephan Mission in Fort Thompson. He farmed on the family farm until enlisting in the U.S. Marines.
He spent his 21st birthday on the front lines of the Korean War. In 1953, he was Honorably Discharged. He was employed as a plumber and electrician for Friendly Gas in Kimball, SD.
Lyal was united in marriage to Delores Hantke on June 30, 1954 at Kimball, SD. He worked as a lineman in telephone construction in Minnesota for several years and obtained his degree. He worked construction during the summer on the construction of Interstate 90 from Mount Vernon to Murdo.
During the winter months, he drove semi-trucks for Little Audrey Trucking through several states including California. He later worked as a lineman in South Dakota and began working for Midstate as a Central Office Equipment technician around 1969. He was employed with them for 27 years until retiring in 1996.
During their younger years, Lyal and Delores lived in several different towns. In 1963, they purchased their home in Pukwana where Delores raised their children and Lyal continued traveling for work. Lyal was a lifetime member of the Newman-Millage American Legion Post No.
201 of Pukwana. He loved to go fishing and taking his boat out. He enjoyed gardening and canning foods.
Many children in Pukwana that loved Lyal and referred to him as “Grandpa”. He taught many children how to water ski. Lyal passed away on April 17, 2019 at Firesteel Nursing Home in Mitchell at the age of 87 years.
Gratefully sharing his life are his wife Delores of Pukwana; son Owen Stoll; daughter Mary and Donald Felten; seven grandchildren Shilo and Tracey Thaemert, Scott and Rene King, Alan Dixon, Amanda Dixon, Nick White Bird, Chris White Bird, Jane Morgan Tesch; many great grandchildren; and several great great grandchildren; brother Bill and wife Alvena Stoll of Pukwana; sisters Grace Smith of Houston, CA, Louise Stanton of Chamberlain, and Jim and Joyce Schoenfelder of Washington; and many other relatives. Preceding him in death were his parents Howard and Venita Stoll, a brother Bernard “Pud” Stoll, infant brother Howard Jr., daughter Venita, two grandsons Tyrone and Matthew, great granddaughter Randi, and great great granddaughter Bonnie, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
