Julio Avael, Jr. September 18, 1943 – January 12, 2019 Share this obituary Local Florists Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Julio Avael, Jr., lost his battle with a rare disease, Saturday, January 12, 2019, in Winter Haven, Florida, he was 75 years old. In a rich career, he will be remembered for serving the citizens of Key West, Florida as the City Administrator for 14 years and serving as their Chief of Police. He was a member of the Key West Rotary Club and a member of the State and National Certified Public Administrators Association.

He had a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Florida International University and a degree in Certified Public Managers from Florida State University. He was President of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Key West and a mentor to the students in the Key West school association. He was selected as the Outstanding Young Man in America in 1973.

He loved the water surrounding the Florida Keys and had his certification in Scuba Diving. As an artist he had an exceptional talent for painting portraits and Key West landscapes. He was very musically inclined and became a professional drummer.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Key West, Florida. He is served by his wife of 44 years, RaiEtte Williams Avael of Winter Haven, Florida; two sons, Julio Avael, III of Miami, Florida and Darren Avael of Key West, Florida; one brother, Adolfo Avael of Hardy, Virginia; two sisters, Nellie Vargas of Key Wests, Florida and Linda Beiro of Zephyrhills, Florida. And 6 grandchildren also survive.

His funeral service honoring the life and achievements of Julio Avael, Jr., will be held Sunday, January 20th, 2019 at 2:00pm in the Clayland Baptist Church with the Rev. Daryl Fletcher, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
