Obituary for Julius “Dewey” E Fambry Julius “Dewey” E. Fambry, of The Colony, TX, left this world on September 16, 2018, at the age of 85. Dewey was born on October 21, 1932 in a small town in Southern Ohio originally known as Forestville, which is now considered Cincinnati. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Rosa Anna Fambry, his father, Emil Fambry, his mother, Marie Fambry, his sister Loretta Fontaine, and his brother Charles Fambry.

Dewey is survived by one sister, Alice Tyra; his daughters, Judi Wright (and husband Rick Wright), Janet Forbess (and her husband Rick Forbess); grandchildren, Shane Dodson, Jeremy McGar (and his wife Brianna), and Chase Dodson; great-grandchild, Gunnar McGar; along with several nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and a village of neighbors and friends who knew and loved him. Having been raised by a strict Catholic Mother, he was forced to attend Guardian Angel school until his Mother passed when he was in 4th grade. His Father then allowed him to transfer to the local Anderson Township school close to their home.

In 1949, Dewey enlisted in the Army Airborne division. After initial training at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, he went on to Ft.

Bragg to complete his Airborne training, and later Ranger training. Dewey spent 20+ years in the Army and rose to the position of First Sergeant. During his years of service, he was awarded many combat decorations, was wounded two times in Vietnam, receiving two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.

He retired from the military in 1970 and took a position in private education with Lincoln Technical Institute in the Indianapolis area. He was soon promoted to the position of Director, and transferred to Texas to run the Dallas location. It was his firm belief that teaching young men how to work on cars and trucks provided them skills to earn a living and he was good at what he did.

He also taught Automotive Technology classes at Cooke County Junior College. Later, after years managing Lincoln Technical Institute, Dewey started his own auto repair business (House Calls Automotive), first working from home, and later opening locations in Little Elm and old downtown Frisco. As he neared retirement age, he sold the physical locations of the business and ran House Calls Automotive out of his garage.

Many friends, family and neighbors in need were the recipient of pro-bono work on their cars. Eventually, Dewey did fully retire from business and devoted his time and energy to helping Veterans, the City of The Colony and other causes near to his heart. He was one of the founding members and the first Commander of the American Legion Holley-Riddle Post 21.

He was also instrumental in building the Veterans Memorial at The Colony 5-Star Complex in The Colony. For many years, Dewey helped organize and spoke at many of the Memorial Day and Labor Day events and at the local schools. He was a great fund raiser for the organizations he was involved in and, if he ever came to your door, as he did to the local businesses in The Colony, you knew it was hard to say no.

Dewey was also committed to helping our returning soldiers ease back into civilian life, showing them how to maximize the available benefits the military offered, as he did when his Grandson Jeremy came home from Iraq. In November 2011, Dewey was nominated by Mayor McCourry and was awarded the Congressional Veteran Commendation for his tireless involvement in the city and his efforts in support of veterans work. He was presented the award by Congressman Michael Burgess, an honor he was very proud of.

He was also active, and a Life Member, of many associations including The American Legion, the VFW #9168, the Masons, the Demolay, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and several other military units he served in. Separate from his civic duties, Dewey was also a runner and multi-sport athlete. He ran often, competing almost weekly in races and his home is full of awards.

He was a member of the Colony Roadrunners, The Plano Pacers and other running clubs where he is still known, loved and talked about. He not only competed in runs, but duathlons, triathlons and marathons. He was quite proud to have competed in 3 Duathlon World Championships, 2 in the U.S., and one in Calais, France.

Dewey often said he might not be able to outrun his competitors but, if he hung around long enough, he just might outlive them. Dewey enjoyed sitting in his garage having a beer and blasting his Austrian polka music. If you were a neighbor, you know what I am talking about.

He was an active member of The Colony Senior Center and enjoyed learning new technology. He was involved with the “computer club” at the Senior Center where he and others taught seniors computer skills and helped with technology issues. Dewey and his beloved wife Rosa (“Shorty”), who very recently preceded him in death, lived a very colorful life prior to their retirement years.

There are many tales of shenanigans during the army years abroad and it is obvious that he passed these genes down to his Grandsons. He had a personality that could light up a room, and a mischievous, boyish smile that always made him look like he may be up to no good. Dewey’s legacy lives on in his children, grandchildren and all those he touched with his many civic outreaches.
