It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Katheryn A. Mateskon of Indian River. She was born in East Jordan on her grandparent’s farm on August 2, 1917, the daughter of Ray W. Hott and Harriett (Gunsolus) Hott. She grew up in Detroit and attended school at Pershing High School, Cass Tech High School and Wayne State University.

On May 28th, 1942 she married Victor S. Mateskon, MD and began her lifelong work as a loving wife and mother. Together she and Vic had six children, Nancy, Steve, Ami, John, Charlie and Vicki. Throughout her lifetime she was a fierce advocate for education, having served on the St. Francis Xavier school board for a time and encouraging all she met to study hard and continue their own schooling because,” It’s never too late” and “ They can never take it away from you”.

She was a woman of faith and for many years she volunteered at the Cross in the Woods Shrine, where she was a member of the parish, giving tours of the grounds to visitors. She had also been a member of the St Francis Xavier parish for many years. Along with her husband she enjoyed spending time outdoors, camping, and boating, swimming, hiking, skiing and even rollerblading, just for the joy of exercise.

She also owned and rode a moped for many years. She found pleasure in reading, playing the organ, playing cards and volunteering at Bay Bluffs in Harbor Springs. She loved to travel and was thrilled to have visited many exciting destinations including, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Italy and particularly enjoyed many trips to the Rocky Mountains in the US.

She was truly a “People Person”, always interested in others, and had a great sense of humor which assisted her in making connections easily with perfect strangers. Katheryn is survived by her children Steve (Jan) Mateskon, Ami (Terry Elder) Mateskon, John (Liz) Mateskon, Charlie (Joan) Mateskon, Vicki (Jim) Walker and son-in-law Jon Peot. Grandchildren Brian Peot, Krista (Wade) Owens, Julia (Ryan) Donovan, Laura (Kenneth) Jackson, Kate (Ray Palmer) Mateskon-Palmer, Maggie (Cale) Hofferber, Carolyn (Chad) Spurway, Andrew (Beth) Mateskon, Matthew Walker, Amey Walker, Emma (Taylor) Hall, as well as eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Victor, her parents, and her daughter Nancy Peot, her brother Richard Hott, and sister Jean (Hott) Harter. Visitation will be held at the Lintz Funeral Home on Thursday May 3rd from 6-8 PM with a vigil prayer service at 7PM. The funeral will be at the Cross in the Woods Catholic Church on May 4th at 12N with the family greeting guests for visitation one hour prior.

In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in memory of Katheryn should consider their local Salvation Army, The Cross in the Woods Catholic Church or a scholarship of their own choosing.
