Obituary for Kelly Fern Hatfield McCarthy Kelly Fern Hatfield McCarthy, our daughter, sister and aunt passed away peacefully at her parent’s home in Riverton, Utah on Monday, December 10th, after a 10-year struggle with metastatic melanoma. She was born on June 6, 1962 in Provo, Utah to parents Gary Keith and Janet Benson Hatfield, the second of six children. She married James Patrick McCarthy (PhD) on her birthday, June 6, 2013.

He died October 22, 2017. Kelly had amazing faith and courage. She endured many trials during her life, but everything she decided to do was accomplished with great courage, strength, dedication and determination.

In elementary school she set a goal to attend all church meetings 100% from then to college and she did that. She graduated from Granite High School where she was a member of pep club and many other activities. She graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Economics.

She became interested in politics and was active in the Republican Party. She was elected as a Councilwoman for Midvale City and served actively in all community affairs and decisions. She was proud to be a volunteer driver for the 2002 Olympics.

She was employed for most of her career in the banking industry, moving from teller to the charitable trust department at Wells Fargo Bank. An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, she loved doing family research and attending the temple. She served two missions in different stakes in the area.

She also loved the elderly sisters she served in a church assignment in a care center and was a friend to all of them and served lovingly much past the assigned length. She was a special and beloved Aunt to 14 nieces and nephews and one grandnephew. She adored them all.

She is survived by parents, Gary and Janet Hatfield, Sister Karen and husband Scott Nowling, St. George, Utah. Brothers, Gregory K. and Susan Clark Hatfield, Sandy; J. Golden and Patty Ranck Hatfield, Draper; and N. Benson and Anne Pendleton Hatfield, Rexburg, Id. She is also survived by a very special “sister”, Noriko Doi of Narita, Japan, who came as an ESL student 20 years ago and has been a beloved family member, coming “home” regularly.

A very special Uncle and Aunt, W. Clark and Sandra Jo Benson and their daughter, Michelle, have been so helpful, supportive and loving. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, and infant brother, Gary Benson Hatfield. Thanks to the many medical professionals, friends, neighbors and church family who have loved and cared for her for so long.

Services will be on Friday, December 21st in the Riverton 16th ward chapel at 1208 West 12400 South, Riverton. A viewing will begin at 9:30 a.m. before the funeral at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Springville, Utah. Her parting words and warning would be “Always get a second opinion and use SUNSCREEN!
