Obituary for Mrs. Laura J. Alexander Obituary Funeral services will be held at 9:00 AM Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA. Sunday, May 27, 2018, Laura Johnson Alexander entered eternal rest. Laura Johnson Alexander was born on February 28, 1928 to the parentage of Joseph Johnson and Helina Chenier.

Laura married Marshall Alexander and to that union was blessed with seven children. She was a devoted homemaker providing nurturing care and guidance to her children throughout their grade school and college formulative years. Laura was an outstanding and brilliant cook and baker whose cakes and pies were requested and enjoyed by many at weddings and especially around the holidays.

She was also a passionate and avid reader. Laura was employed at Savoie’s Sausage Kitchen where she worked as a meat processing operator until leaving to be the full-time caregiver of her husband Marshall who had become ill. After his death, she devoted her time to the care of others as a volunteer with the St. Landry Parish Community Action Agency Senior Companions Program.

She was an outstanding volunteer, happily and eagerly caring for others until her health began to decline. Laura loved God and was a devout Catholic raised in the Church from a young age. Following her marriage, she became a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church of Port Barre, LA.

where she raised her children and ensured they were instilled with a strong education and knowledge of God, and where all her children completed their First Communion and Confirmation. Laura later transferred her membership back to Holy Ghost and was a faithful and active member until her death. Laura was also a member of Inseparable Friends Benevolent Society (IFBS) Ladies Auxiliary.

Laura is preceded in death by her husband Marshall; her father, Joseph Johnson; her mother, Helina Chenier Johnson; brothers Thomas Johnson, Amos Johnson and Aaron Johnson; a daughter Peggy Alexander; one son Anthony Ray Alexander; and a grandson, Paul Alexander, Jr. Laura leaves to cherish her memories four sons, Michael Alexander (Hattie) – of Houston, TX, Marshall Alexander Jr of Houston, TX, Harold Alexander (Alma) of Fort Worth, TX, and Paul Alexander (Rose) of Grandview, MO; and two daughters, Pauline Alexander Hawkins (Lawerence) of Houston, TX and Anita Alexander of Dallas, TX; sisters-in-law – Verlee Andrus (Ervin), Pearl Kennerson, Genevieve Backus, (James), Verlie Alexander and brother-in-law George Alexander; her cousin and close friend Marjorie Pickney, her niece and close friend Cora Ned, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, god-children, relatives and friends. Laura leaves to continue her legacy 22 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, Visiting hours will be observed from 7:00 AM to 8:45 AM Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Williams Funeral Home.
