Ila “Lavaughn” Bates, of Cumberland passed away surrounded by her loving family on January 29, 2019 at Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was 85 years old. Lavaughn was born in Noble County on August 5, 1933.

She is the daughter of the late Rado Johnson and Shella (Feldner) Johnson. She was baptized in the Church of Christ and she was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed canning and loved working in her flowers.

Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her husband, her children and her grandchildren. Lavaughn is survived by her husband of 63 years, Robert A. Bates, whom she married, January 28, 1956; her two children, Jeffrey (Bea) Bates and Susan (Jeffrey) Tucker both of Cumberland; her two grandchildren, Erica (Chris) Kenny and William (Liv) Bates; two great-grandchildren, Cora Kenny and Hicel Bates; two step-great-grandchildren, Maria and Inez. She is also survived by her sister, Arlene (Gerald) Davis of Caldwell; her sister-in-law, Earnestine Johnson of Canton, and several nieces and nephews.

She also had a special K-9 friend, Zoe. In addition to her parents, Lavaughn is preceded in death by her infant daughter, Sheryl Ann Bates and her five brothers, Harold, Leonard, Bernard, Harley and Roy Johnson. She is also preceded in death by her sister-in-law’s, Ruth (Charles) Boyd and Ruby (Dick) Blackstone.

Visitations will be 11 to 1 pm on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the Farus Funeral Home of Cumberland, where funeral services will be at 1 pm with Pastor Keith Taylor officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Cumberland Cemetery. www.
