OBITUARY Lawrence Gary “Butch” Lawless January 5, 1944 – January 12, 2019 Lawrence Gary “Butch” Lawless, a resident of Mt. Olive, Alabama was born on January 5, 1944 and he passed away peacefully with his wife and daughters by his side on January 12, 2019 at the age of 75. Butch held memberships in several organizations and he had accomplished many achievements.

A list of some of them is as follows; •Dual membership in the Masonic lodges; Gardendale #907 F & AM and the McCarty Farrar #8 F & AM. •Lifetime member of the North Jefferson Fraternal Order of Police lodge #59. •Member of the Birmingham Zamora Temple and was an active Shriner for several years.

•Member of the Alabama Peace Officers Association. •Instrumental in establishing the Mt. Olive Volunteer Fire Department and served as first Fire Chief.

•Field Training Officer with the Sheriff’s department and later served as Sargent over the FTO’s. •Original Team member of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team. •During his career as a Jefferson County Sherriff, he worked in the Patrol and Corrections divisions and served as Sergeant and Lieutenant over those same divisions before retiring after 30+ years.

•Graduated UAB with a degree in Criminal Justice. •Received numerous training certifications: Bombing Investigator, Chemical Workshops, Interrogation Trainings, Narcotics Workshops, Expert Marksmanship, EMT, VIP Protection Training, Tactical Operations, Riot and Crowd Control Training, Hostage Negotiations and many more. Butch was preceded in death by his mother, Ethyl Lee Adcock; father, Frank Mitt Smith; step-father, Robert E. Adcock; and his grandparents, R.B. and Sarah Jane Lawless.

Butch is survived by wife, Roma Nell Lawless; daughters, Kellie Bass and her husband, Trey and Janelle Albright and her husband, Bruce; one sister, Mitzi Linder and her husband, Don; six grandchildren, Matthew Bass, Kristina Bass, Andy McDuffee, Austin McDuffee, Corey Albright, and Chris Albright (Taylor). Celebration of life services will be held in the Celebration Chapel at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 with a time of visitation to begin at 10:00am; funeral service at 11:00am followed by his burial in Oakwood Memorial Gardens, Gardendale, Alabama. Services will be officiated by Gary Creel and Randy Hays.
