Known as Lawrence by most and “Opa” to his family and closest friends, he was born on 3 July 1935 to the late Lew and Sophfronia Booth Smith. A life-long Frankfort native he was a 1954 graduate of Elkhorn High School.
Lawrence proudly served his country as a member of the US Army Reserve from 1954 to 1962. Attaining the rank of Sergeant, he could be depended upon to faithfully execute any assigned task from serving as mess sergeant to performing administrative duties to running the firing ranges and serving as a weapons instructor. In 1997 Lawrence retired from the Rand McNally Corporation in Versailles, Kentucky after thirty-four years.
He worked as a press foreman/operator and attained the final position of master craftsman. Nick-named “Crazy Jim” by his co-workers, he was an honest and trustworthy employee and highly regarded by his coworkers. An avid sportsman, Lawrence spent many long hours hunting and fishing.
He made every attempt to share with and pass on his love of the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. Along with his wife, Anne, he shared a passion for camping, was a charter member of the MUDCATS, and a member of the Kentucky River Campground for almost thirty years. His children and grandchildren have many fond memories of time spent fishing and boating with Opa.
Lawrence was a very generous man with an extremely boisterous personality. At the campground, he could always be found in the middle of any project, whether it was moving boat docks to or from the river, hosing away mud after one of the numerous floods, or cooking Derby breakfast. Opa is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Anne Katherine Smith Vaughn Smith; sister Betty Lou (Robert) Smither; brother Gayle Smith; sons Larry (Vicki) Smith; Layne (Tish) Smith; David Smith; Mark (Mary) Vaughn; daughter Susan (Steve) Clark; grandchildren Ryan (Whitney) Smith; Kayla (Matt) Lee; Grant Smith; Eric Smith; Chris (Amy) Green; Lauren Walter; Michael Clark; Travis Clark; Jordan Clark; Katie (Steve) Colley; Tommy (Lydia) Vaughn; seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
