LeRoy “Lee” Henry Brandt, age 74, died Friday morning, January 18, 2019 at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. A visitation with Lee’s family will begin at 5 p.m. with a Celebration of Life Service beginning at 7 p.m. on Monday, January 21st at O’Leary Funeral & Cremation Services in Norwalk. Military honors including a 21 gun salute and flag presentation will immediately follow the services performed by the Cumming American Legion Post 562.

Burial will follow later this year in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter. Lee is the son of LeRoy Brandt, Sr and Teresa Seidl Brandt. He was born on February 22, 1944 and grew up in Woden, IA with three brothers and two sisters.

Following his graduation from Woden-Crystal Lake High School ,he enlisted into the United States Air Force where he served honorably from May 28, 1962 until his retirement on May 31, 1982. He served two tours of duty in Germany and Korea. When he was stationed in the U.S. he lived in the states of Oregon, New Jersey and Washington.

In the Air Force he specialized in Refrigeration and Cryogenics. After retiring he returned to Woden and later lived in both Thompson and Forest City, IA. Lee continued his second career at North Central Human Services in Forest City, where mentally and physically handicapped children and adults are educated and cared for.

There he began working in maintenance on the homes and as a bus driver. He also built adaptive equipment for the clients and later helped with physical therapy. He truly enjoyed; and found it rewarding to help others.

He loved making their lives just a little better and seeing them smile. Five years ago Lee moved to Norwalk to be near his family, and most recently lived at Regency Manor there. Lee is survived his three children; his son Scott (Emily) Brandt and their children, Eric, Nick and Ava; two daughters, Daphne (Matt) Weinecke and their children, Chase and Keegan McKinney and LeAnn Warne and her children, Mikeal and Tiffany.
