Obituary for Leif K. Johansen Leif K. Johansen, 88, longtime Eltingville resident, passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at Carmel Richmond Health Care & Rehab. Cntr. in Staten Island, New York.

Born Sunday, August 11, 1929 in Norway, he was the son of the late Nils Johansen and the late Mathilde Jacobsen Johansen. He was proud of his Norwegian heritage and over the years enjoyed traveling to Norway to visit family. Leif met the love of his life, his childhood sweetheart, Elsie at a dance, and on March 31, 1951 they wed, and were inseparable until Elsie’s passing in 2010.

Leif proudly and honorably served our Country in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, achieving the rank of Corporal. He enjoyed traveling and cruises with his wife, especially to Alaska and Norway. As his family recalls, the most memorable times spent were each year the family would travel upstate New York to East Meredith and visit the ”Schoolhouse”, their second home.

Some of their best times were spent there. They recall from a very early age doing so, and the tradition continued with his grandchildren. Leif had a love of fishing and was passionate about his collection of lighthouses.

Above all, he was an extremely loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, who always put family first. Leif was predeceased by his beloved wife, Elsie, who passed away in 2010. He was also predeceased by his loving son, David, who also passed away in 2010 and his sister, Mabel Olsen and her late husband, Kjell, as well as his late granddaughter, Laura Logan.

He is survived by his daughter, Laila Garrett and her husband, Larry; his daughter-in-law, Stephanie Johansen; his siblings, Norma Sherland and her husband Raymond, Esther Ludvigsen and her late husband, Harry and Marilyn Thompson and her husband Eddie. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Brittany, Andrew, Douglas and Matthew Johansen and Cheryl Waterson and her husband Bill and Kathryn Watkins and her husband Andrew. He is also survivied by his 5 great grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

. A Funeral Service will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 16, 2018 at Eltingville Lutheran Church located at 300 Genesee Ave Staten Island, New York 10312. Interment will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.

The family will receive friends from 4-9 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2018, at the John Vincent Scalia Home For Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd. (at Eltingville Station), Staten Island, New York. If so desired, contributions in Leif’s memory to The Alzheimer’s Association (Staten Island Chapter) would be greatly appreciated.
