Leona was born November 9, 1920 in Longton, Kansas, the daughter of Harrison and Hattie (Fields) Rothgeb. Leona graduated from Elk Valley High School, Longton, Kansas in 1939.

On December 10, 1940, in Nevada, Missouri, Leona was united in marriage to the love of her life, Mr. Joseph Carlton Stocking.
