Obituary for Leslie Anne Atkins On January 3, 2019, Leslie Anne (Bender, Schmidt) Atkins of York, PA, completed her journey at Manor Care Kingston Court and embarked on her new celestial mission. She was born in Wilmington, Delaware on May 30, 1957. As she proudly said, it was a good year for women and Chevrolets.

She was the wife and companion of Thomas J. Atkins of York for over 30 years. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, John H. Schmidt Jr., of Newark, DE, her step-daughters, Lisa Atkins Carleton (husband, Pete) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Jennifer Hargis (husband, Andy) of Loveland, Ohio; her mother and step-father, Shirley and Harry Jester of Newark, DE, and her sisters, Cheryl Wheeler (husband Jim Brown) of Wilmington, and Kelly Bender of Perryville, Md. She was preceded in death by her father, James Bender of Perrine, FL, and her brothers, David and Richard Bender.

Leslie was an avid golfer. She won the Heritage Hills Women’s Club Championship in 2002 and was an active participant in WYCAGA, both as a club representative in their match play league and in many tournaments. Through WYCAGA, she was a strong advocate for Junior girls golf.

Leslie was also a tireless volunteer for her causes. She began her service in York by serving as a mentor in the YWCA’s Moms and Mentors program. She was also devoted to her service with the Lehman Center of York.

She served for years on their Citizen’s Advisory Board, and when their annual golf outing and fund raiser was in trouble, she stepped in to revitalize it. She also was a devoted participant in their Teen Parenting program at William Penn High School. Through her service at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, she was the coordinator of the Teen Program for several years, as well as serving as a volunteer for their chicken barbecues and shopping for their holiday donations to the Food Bank.

A celebration of life service is being planned in the Wilmington, Delaware area. Her sparkling blue eyes, winning smile and ebullient personality will be missed by all who knew her.
