Obituary for Leslie Virginia Meents Leslie Virginia Meents, age 51, passed away on Thursday, November 29, in Grand Island. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec 5th at the Evangelical Free Church of Grand Island. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 – 6:30 pm at All Faiths Funeral Home.
Leslie was born on March 4, 1967 in Fairbury, NE, to Frank and Virginia Elliott. Leslie graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1985. She was a cheerleader and excelled in vocal music.
She especially enjoyed singing in the GISH Madrigals group. Leslie earned her respiratory therapy license via California College at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings. She worked as a respiratory therapist at Mary Lanning for three years.
Leslie married Mike Meents on Aug 5, 1989 and to this union, three children were born. Their daughter, Blakley Virginia, passed away just before birth. They also had two sons, Grady and Jaden, and the family made their home in Blue Hill.
Later they moved to Grand Island and Leslie worked as a port-a-medic, doing blood draws and EKG’s for insurance applicants. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Doane College in 2009. As a child, Leslie loved horses and often competed in pole-bending and barrel racing events.
She also enjoyed helping her grandpa in their huge garden and grew many prize-winning vegetables and flowers. She enjoyed gymnastics and playing the piano as well. As an adult, Leslie loved following her children’s sport teams.
She spent many happy hours watching Grady play traveling baseball with the Blackhawks and football with the Central Catholic Crusaders. She loved watching Jaden compete in wrestling and taekwondo. Those were really special memories for her.
Years later, Leslie was delighted to become a grandmother. Majer and Brylie brought her much joy and delight, and she was very proud of them. Leslie loved her friends deeply—especially the NA girls who gathered at Shannon’s every Tuesday night.
She was a great listener and a generous soul. This generosity is evident also in her final act of organ donation. Leslie is survived by her mother, Virginia Elliott, of Grand Island; sons, Grady Meents of Grand Island and Jaden Meents of Alda; brother, Jay Elliott (and wife, Sam) of North Platte; nephews, Logan Elliott (and wife, Chantel) of North Platte, Austin Elliott and Creighton Elliott of Lincoln; grandchildren, Majer Meents of Grand Island and Brylie Meents of Alda; and Uncle Jim Brown and Aunt Norma Brown of Leesburg, VA.
