LILLIAN MOORE On September 1 Lillian Moore died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 92. Lillian and Frank, her husband of 69 years, moved to a house on Town Mountain in Asheville when Frank retired from his position as a professor of English at N. C. State University in Raleigh. In 2006 they became residents at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in Asheville.

Lillian was born in Greenville, South Carolina. She and Frank met as graduate students in English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and they raised a family in Raleigh before they retired to Asheville. They spent their summers at Monte Vista, a beautiful home high on a ridge surrounded by mountains near Cashiers, a town about forty miles southwest of Asheville.

Monte Vista had belonged to Lillian’s family since the 1890s. To reach Cashiers from Greenville in the early 1890s, the family had to travel by horse and wagon for three days, camping along the way. Family lore reports that they sometimes heard panthers scream in the night.

Lillian had the fondest memories of childhood summers spent at Monte Vista, with picnics, tall tales on the porch, pranks played on guests, and wonderful meals. Lillian enjoyed gardening, music, reading, horseback riding, evening walks, and long hikes in the mountains. Her hospitality, her generosity, and her sense of humor were legendary.

She bore the burdens of advancing age with dignity and cheerful acceptance. Lillian was dearly loved and will be sorely missed by her husband Frank; her son Ken and her daughters Amy and Mary; her son-in-law Starcen and her daughter-in-law Jean; her granddaughters Emily and Carson; and her many friends. The family will celebrate Lillian’s life on September 9 at 2:30 pm in the Health Care Chapel at Deerfield.

The family will receive guests at a reception at Deerfield after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that anyone wishing to make a memorial gift consider a contribution to the Deerfield Staff Appreciation Fund or to the CarePartners Hospice, Asheville.
