Lorna Mayme Bond Nichols Jenkins, 90, of La Junta passed away on September 25, 2018 at the Bent County Memorial Nursing home in Las Animas. She was born on November 29, 1927 in Rocky Ford to Herman & Loie (Beer) Bond. Lorna was raised on a ranch north of Arlington, where she spent countless hours working cattle and riding horses.

Lorna was proud of her horsemanship skills and was selected and served as the 1942 Kids’ Rodeo Queen. She married Kenneth Jenkins in 1948. To this… Read More » union three children were born: Helen (Bill) Dutro, Glenda (Mark) Schneider and Kent Jenkins.

Lorna worked for 30 years as a bookkeeper-secretary at the Cheraw school district. Upon retiring, Lorna and Kenneth became full time RV’ers, spending their winters at Blue Mesa Reservoir, west of Gunnison. Lorna leaves behind two loving grandchildren, Carrie (Rob) Archer of Ardmore, OK; Kelly Schneider of Greeley; three great-grandchildren, Gunnar, Lilly, and Colton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandchildren, Christa Doak and Michael Schneider. As per Lorna’s request cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers those wishing to do so may make memorial contributions to the Arkansas Valley Hospice, PO Box 408, La Junta, CO 81050 or the Casa Del Sol Retirement Community of La Junta direct or through the funeral home.
