Obituary of Lula Holt Lula Doris McEachin was born on February 14, 1937 to Estella and Mitchell McEachin in Bowmore, NC. She departed this life on Friday July 6, 2018. “Doris” as everyone in the family fondly called her (she was known as Lula or Lu by her work family) was the second oldest of five sisters.
Maggie Lois (being the oldest) Ruth Vivian (third oldest) Gladys Louise (fourth oldest) and Estella Sandra (the baby). Doris attended Upchurch High School. While in attendance there, in addition to other high school activities she was also a majorette.
She received her high school diploma from Upchurch in 1955. Doris moved to New York shortly after graduating, where she planted her new roots. It was there that she met and married Charles Bernard Holt.
From this matrimonial union were born a daughter, Verna Denise and a son, Jimmy Bernard. Doris took advantage of many programs that were created in the very early seventies by the then New York Mayor Abe Beame. Under these programs, she was able to begin her career working for the City of New York at the Brooklyn House of Detention on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, NY.
Doris decided to go to school to get her Bachelor’s Degree in 1972. It took her eight years to get her degree. From 1972 to 1980 she worked during the day and attended college at night.
In 1980, she graduated from the College of New Rochelle with a Bachelor’s Degree in the Arts. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior in May of 1979 and proceeded to live her life dedicated to the Lord and doing His work. Doris continued to work for the City of New York in various agencies and programs such as BCW (Bureau of Child Welfare), BCS (Bureau of Child Support).
She also worked in the Food Stamp Division in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. In later years she worked at the Department of Probation and her last assignment, Camp LaGuardia in Chester NY. Doris retired from the City of New York in 1994.
She continued to work part time as substitute teacher in the Hoke County school district. She was also a Hospice Volunteer. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren on many Thanksgivings and Christmases and other times throughout the year.
She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter, Verna D. Darby who was right by her side when she passed, her son-in-law, Darrin D. Darby; five grandchildren: Michael Darrin Darby, Darrin Charles Darby, Danielle Elizabeth Darby, Dominique April Darby, and Taylor Mangabang-Holt; four great-grandchildren: Divino Deon Silverio-Mendez (Dominique) and Gabriella Marie Karow Holt (Taylor) McKenzie Darby and Kaden Darby (Michael). She leaves two nieces, Wilma Spray and Lois Crank (Ruth) and two nephews, Marlon D. Overton (Gladys) and Kendrick Hart (Maggie); a cousin Tinita Rieves (Cousin Constance) two great-nephews, Anthony and Aaron(Wilma) and a host of other family and friends. Doris was preceeded in death by her husband, Charles Bernard Holt in 1983; both of her parent, Mitchell and Estella McEachin and just this year she was predeceased by her son, Jimmy Bernard Holt who succumbed to renal cancer on March 26th 2018.
She was also predeceased by all four of her sisters: Maggie Lois (Kendrick), Ruth Vivian (Lois and Wilma) Gladys Louise (Marlon) and Estella Sandra (no children). At this time the family would like to thank all the angels Autumn Care of Raeford who took exceptional care of my mother, Doris. A very special shout out to the angels who were in direct hands on care with my mother.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 13 and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 14 at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52 Woodbourne, NY 12788. Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 14 at the funeral home with Pastor James Hinton Officiating.
