Luz E. Vega born December 31, 1927, better known to most as Mama Lucy, was born in Yauco PR, the daughter of Tito Caraballo and Margarite Velasquez. She married Louis Vega and had three sons. Standing just about 5 feet tall, Mama Lucy ruled with an iron fist and a gentle heart.

She kept us all mindful of our culture through music, food, and language. She was defined by family and togetherness. All of us can remember all the picnics, the beaches, the camping trips, and, let’s not forget, the parties.

She was fierce, she was progressive, she was insightful, she was loving. When she decided it was time to do something, it was time to do something. When she decided it was time to buy a house, she and Papa Louie bought a house, both in New Jersey and Florida.

But it was her vision that was so important. It was never about what COULD be, it was about what WOULD be. She lived the dream and made it happen.

She inspired us all. She was a role model. She was a pioneer.

She was a force. Mama Lucy didn’t have to say much in Spanish or in English to get her point across. But she made her point all the time.

As life and time began to transition her to move on to the next world, with aches and pains, and memory loss, we must remember that she imparted something in each of us… a sense of boldness, a love of family, a zest for life, a commitment of being a wife, a mom, a grandmother, an aunt, and a friend. Today we are saddened by her passing, but we have to be joyful in knowing she meets our Lord greeted by her husband Louis and son Louie. She will continue to look down on us with a watchful, protective eye.

We are all blessed to have known her and had her here with us for so very long and blessed to take a little of her with us as we move forward in this world. Luz E. Vega, or Mama Lucy as we affectionately called her, is survived by her sons Robert and Hector, their wives, Susan and Marlena; grandchildren Desiree, Robert “Butch”, Stephanie, Louis, Jessica, Tara, Miguel, Daniel, Aaron; and great grandchildren, Gillian, Jamie, Olivia, Derek, Imani, Gabriel, Joey, Matthew, Noel and many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.
