Mamie loved to work and began doing so at an early age picking cotton alongside her siblings for five cents per pound. Later, she would become regional manager for Stanley Home Products, earning numerous awards in a career that spanned over 30 years. In addition, she often wore a hard hat alongside her husband, Ed, on his construction projects, earning her the nickname “the Boss’s Boss”.

Mamie Lee Grantham was an avid outdoorswoman. She had a lifelong passion for fishing that was passed down to her from her daddy. She also enjoyed hunting and could frequently be found in the woods in pursuit of deer, turkey, ducks, and squirrels.

Her favorite shotgun was a Browning A5 12 gauge and untold game found itself on her table after finding itself on the wrong end of her barrel. For many, Mrs. Mamie was best known for her cooking. Very rarely using recipes, she could create gourmet meals from whatever she had on hand, preferring ingredients from her own garden.

The love of cooking fostered two more of Mrs. Mamie’s interests; gardening and making homemade sausage. She and her husband, Ed, created a recipe for sausage that they names “M&E” sausage, for ‘Mamie and Ed’. It was a hit and the pair purchased additional equipment to keep up with demand.

Eventually, they scaled back production to personal use after production time cut into typically spent in the woods and on the lake. Her garden, however, is something she maintained until the final days of her life. Trips to the grocery store rarely included trips down the produce isle, due to her gardening.

For those that knew her best, many would say her sense of humor was a defining trait. In stark contrast to husband Ed’s dry, straight-forward demeanor, Mrs. Mamie often would bring listeners to laughter with her unique story telling ability and keen wit. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish Mamie’s memory include her daughter, Elizabeth Bailey Paul (Larry); one brother, Ed Johnson; one sister, Alice Mays; one grandchild, Mark Kendall Bailey; and one great grandchild, Bryce Bailey. Mamie is preceded in death by her parents, Noah Johnson and Orelia McGee Johnson; husband, Edward Grantham; one son, Bobby Joe Peterson; five brothers, Doug, Matt, Doc, Jimmy, and J.R. Johnson; and three sisters, Vergie, Janie, and Eva.
