Obituary for Margit Peterson Brem Margit, 90, of Black Mountain passed peacefully into Glory on Thursday, December 6, 2018. She began her adventure on New Years Eve 1927 in Malmo, Sweden, as a sibling to her twin brother, Arne. She followed in the footsteps of her mother, Esther Eijers, working as an authentic Swedish massage therapist on ocean liners crossing and re-crossing the Atlantic between Europe and New York.
In her thirties, Margit came to America with but one plea from the family, “do not marry an American”. The Charlotte boy she met in Asheville traveled with her to Sweden and charmed her family and so they married, had children and moved to Black mountain. In the early sixties, Margit gave her professional life the back seat choosing to stay home with her children, teaching them love, kindness, skiing, needlepoint, discipline, and Swedish swear words.
Her therapy did, however, continue on for many years by word of mouth referrals to make house calls to friends and their friends suffering with minor aches or for major rehabilitation. Anyone who met Margit immediately knew of her Blessed Assurance. “Roses to Jesus,” she would smile to you.
Through the years she attended Black Mountain Presbyterian, Christ Community Church in Montreat, and King of Glory in Swannanoa. She also involved herself with the Junior Women’s Club, the Women’s Aglow, the local women’s prison ministry, the Swannanoa Valley Art League, and Meals on Wheels. The joyful Swede eventually moved to Highland Farms, embracing and entertaining all with her singing and perfect impression of a morning rooster.
The love and kindness she received from the staff there kept her later years as emotionally and spiritually productive as ever. These caregivers and the friends who came to visit are too numerous to attempt. You know who you are, and we are forever grateful.
Margit is survived by her grandchildren, Luke (McRae) and Anna Otto; their parents, Nickie (daughter) and Kent (son-in-law); and her favorite and first born son, Eric. The ashes she leaves behind will join those left twelve years ago by Robin Brem, her dearly beloved of 47 years. We loved our parents and are grateful to God for the gift of Eternal Life.
They are reunited now and forever, which fills us with joy. A memorial service will be held Monday, December 17, 2018 at 2:00pm in the Chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Memory Care, 100 Far Horizons Lane, Asheville, NC 28803.
