Obituary for Marie Lorraine Slade Weatherspoon Ms. Marie Lorraine Slade Weatherspoon was born on December 12th, 1950 to the late Mary Louise Slade and Louis Prade Slade of New Orleans, Louisiana, both of whom preceded her in death. Marie Lorraine Slade Weatherspoon was the second born of three children, the other two siblings being her older brother, Louis Prade Slade Junior and her younger brother John Eaves Slade. From childhood Marie Lorraine Slade Weatherspoon wanted to be an educator in order to bring fourth the best in our youth.

Her own education carried her through Rivers Frederick Junior High, McDonogh 35 High School class of 1968, Tuskegee Institute class of 1973, and she was awarded a Masters in education from the University Of New Orleans in 1981. Marie Lorraine Slade Weatherspoon’s career brought her much joy all the way from her early days at Johnson C. Lockett Elementary, and then on to Walter L. Cohen High School, Joseph A. Gaudet Elementary, McDonogh 28, and finally to A. H. Wilson Elementary. She loved guiding young minds and made it her mission in her professional life.

Athletics, like her late father, Louis Prade Slade a Tuskegee Institute Letterman, was a large interest of her life. From being a McDonogh 35 High School Cheerleader to becoming a NORD Summer Camp Director in her adult years as well as a Gymnastics, Basketball, Volleyball, and Track & Field Coach. Marie Lorraine Slade Weatherspoon was so valued by her peers that she was awarded the National Edwin Bancroft Henderson Award for Professionalism In The Field Of Health & Physical Education.

While at McDonogh 28 she was named Teacher Of The Year. Marie Lorraine Slade Weatherspoon was a civic minded citizen as she was a member of many organizations such as the American Association Of Health Physical Education & Dance, the Ethnic Minority Committee Of Health & Physical Education, the New Orleans Urban League, and the New Orleans Alumni Of Tuskegee Club. Marie Lorraine Slade Weatherspoon loved the stage and went on to become one of the well known Dashiki Divas of the famed Dashiki Project Theater under the direction of the late Dr. Ted Gulliam.

She performed in such plays as The First Cool Breeze Of Summer, Steal Away, and the highly successful 1979 production of For Colored Girls in which she essayed the role of the Lady In Brown. She continued her acting and joined the Anthony Bean Theatre in productions like House Warming with the Dashiki Divas, and in Papaya Man where she was the star of the play. In 1981 Marie Lorraine Slade Weatherspoon joined in marriage to Keith E. Weatherspoon and they were blessed with a wonderful daughter, Ashley Marie Weatherspoon.

She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter Ashley Marie Weatherspoon, two uncles, Louis Prade Slade Junior and John Eaves Slade. An extended family of aunts, cousins, along with friends and fellow colleagues. Marie Lorraine Slade Weatherspoon was an intelligent, artistic, lady with a dry rapier wit.

She enjoyed crime novels, movies, art, music, travel, Billy Dee Williams, and Tom Selleck. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a funeral services that will take place at 11:00 AM at Central St. Matthew United Church Of Christ at 1333 South Carrollton Ave. New Orleans Louisiana on Saturday the 12th of January, 2019.
