Mrs. Marie Powell Wright of Florence, Alabama passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2019, after a brief illness. At the time of her death Mrs. Wright was a resident of Mitchell-Hollingsworth Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Florence. She was 93 years old.

Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Clarence E. Wright, who passed away in June of 2005. They had been married for sixty years at the time of his death. Also preceding her in death are her parents, Reverend Luther A. and Annie N. Powell; her brothers, Mr. Grady Powell, Mr. Homer Powell, Mr. Luther E. Powell, and Mr. James (Jack) Powell; her sisters, Mrs. Fairee Powell Croft, and Estelle Powell.

Mrs. Wright was born in Union Grove, Alabama, the daughter of a Methodist Preacher. Her growing-up years were spent in church parsonages as her family moved from one pastoral assignment to another. She graduated Carrollton High School in Pickens County, Alabama, and later attended Business College in Florence.

Mrs. Wright’s career as a legal secretary spanned over sixty years, having worked for some of the most prestigious law firms in North Alabama, and retiring in 2010. She was a member of The National Association of Legal Secretaries, and had served as an officer of the local chapter. Mrs. Wright was a Christian and a member of Northwood United Methodist Church where she taught in the Adult Sunday School Department for several decades.

She was also a Certified Lay Speaker in the Northwest District of the United Methodist Church, and often spoke in churches across the area. In addition, she was a published author having written LIVING THE GOOD LIFE, featuring her own original poems based on her faith in God, her family, and the experiences she had as a Christian wife, mother, and career woman. Mrs. Wright is survived by her three sons: Reverend Larry E. Wright (Charlene), of Madison, Alabama; Mr. Wesley W. Wright (Cindy), of Florence, Alabama; Mr. Gregory S. Wright (Rhoda), of Columbus, Mississippi.

Four Grandchildren: Ms. Selena Wright of Huntsville; Mr. Wesley Wright, of Spring Hill, Tennessee, Mr. Joey Wright, Florence, Alabama, and Mr. Trent Wright of Independence, Missouri. Her Grandsons, Nephews, and family friends will serve as pallbearers. On Wednesday, May 29, there will be a visitation for family and friends from 12 noon until 2pm at Greenview Funeral Home in Florence, followed by a service at 2pm in the chapel.

Interment next to her husband in Greenview Memorial Park will immediately follow. Reverend Al Geise, former Associate Pastor of Northwood, now Senior Pastor of the Hazel Green United Methodist Church will be officiating.
