Obituary for Marilyn E. Carmichael MARILYN E. CARMICHAEL November 30, 1930 – April 22, 2018 She became an instant friend be it to a stranger, a student or a parent. There was not anyone who came in her presence that did not like her. Marilyn loved her Lord and strived throughout her life to carry out his mission on earth.

She adored her three children and five grandchildren. She cherished her cousins and her friends. And she took very seriously her role as teacher to the hundreds of students that passed through her classroom doors.

A native of Crockett, she was a resident of Vallejo since the 1950s. Marilyn, a Crockett rocket, grew up in the small town of Crockett along the Carquinez straits. She attended Carquinez Elementary School and graduated from John Sweat High School.

As a young girl she formulated friendships that lasted for close to eighty years with Begonia, Enes , and Janet. They truly were loving friends. Marilyn in high school played sports, served as the captain of a well-known award-winning drill team, was the Crockett sugar city festival queen and involved with St. Rose Catholic Church of Crockett.

Marilyn attended the former Vallejo Junior College and made a career change from becoming a secretary to being a teacher. She trained for teaching at Holy Names College in Oakland. Her almost fifty years of teaching began at Mills School in Benicia followed by Carquinez Elementary School and finally forty years at the love of her teaching career, St. Basils School in Vallejo.

At St. Basils she taught third, fifth, seventh and eighth grades and when she retired at the young age of 80 was the re teacher. In her long career at St. Basils, she was not only a teacher but worked on the school yearbook, school newspaper, graduation activities, the famous St. Basils talent show, the third-grade Thanksgiving feast, chaperoned the eighth-grade trips back to Washington D.C. and the diocese speech contests. She was nominated teacher of the year several times by the Elks club of Vallejo.

Marilyn loved both her students and the people she worked with. She was the first one to arrive in the morning and get the coffee started in the teacher’s lounge. At the age of eighty, Marilyn’s health determined her retirement.

In her retirement years she spent her time with her buddy and best friend daughter Celia, her sons Ben and Matt, grandchildren, niece Patti Zuppan Hood and fellow friends from St. Basils and childhood friends. Marilyn loved to watch jeopardy, wheel of fortune, and the Warrior games. Marilyn is survived by her beloved daughter Celia, sons Benjamin and Matthew, daughters-in- laws, Maggie and Angelica, grandchildren Matthew, Nicholas, Christian, Madison and Ryan.
