Martha Hughes Smart, 87, of Asheville, passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2018, at the CarePartners Solace Center after a courageous battle with cancer. A native of Buncombe Co., Martha was born on February 16, 1931, to the late Andrew Cecil and Mary Cannon Hughes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, L.P. Smart; sisters, Betty Williams and Leila Reese; and brother, J.C. Hughes.

Mrs. Smart was a graduate of Emma School. She retired from the accounting department of Sears and then also retired from K-Mart. She was a longtime member of West Asheville Baptist Church.

Mrs. Smart is survived by her sisters, Barbara H. Sams, Emily Clark, and Hollie Morris; brothers, Charles T. Hughes (Mary), Walter Hughes, and George Hughes (Robin); sister-in-law, Juanita Hughes; many nieces and nephews; and several special longtime friends. Her family gives special thanks to Dr. Terawaki and the staff of Cancer Care, CarePartners in-home Hospice and the Solace Center. The graveside service for Mrs. Smart will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Green Hills Cemetery with the Rev.
