OBITUARY Mary Anne Martel Passed away on January 29, 2019 Mary Anne (Bernat) Martel, 85, of Wethersfield, beloved wife of Earl J. Martel for 63 years, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. Mary Anne was born in Hartford on March 24, 1933 and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Monica (Urban) Bernat. Mary Anne graduated as an honor student from Hartford Public High School and went on to earn a degree from Hillyard College of West Hartford.

She worked as a medical secretary in the busy surgeon’s office of Dr. Pyrtek until she began her family. Later she was the bookkeeper for her husband at Martel’s Automotive of Wethersfield. Mary Anne and her family enjoyed many years as members of the Wethersfield Country Club and Pine Acres Swim and Tennis Club.

They also enjoyed spending summers at their family beach house in Old Saybrook. She loved her Boston Red Sox, enjoyed reading a good book and playing tennis and golf. She was a devoutly religious woman and extremely proud of her Lithuanian heritage, always looking forward to hosting her Lithuanian picnics.

Most of all she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Being surrounded by her family meant everything to her. In addition to her husband, Mary Anne leaves her sons, E.J. Martel of Wethersfield, Kris Martel and Beth Dronsfield of Newington, her daughters, Karen DeFranco and her husband Steven of Sewell, NJ, Lori McBride of Wethersfield and Pamela McNall and her husband Bill of Atlanta, GA.

She also leaves her beloved nine grandchildren and one cherished great-grandson along with her sister Grace Cashman of South Windsor. Mary Anne will also be missed by her dearest niece Jo-Ann Bialaski and her many nieces, nephews, family and friends. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her sister Aldonna Lasky.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect Street, Wethersfield. Everyone is asked to meet directly at church.

Burial will follow at Village Cemetery in Old Wethersfield. Because of Mary Anne’s kind and generous heart, she donated to many charities, therefore, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the charity of the donor’s choice.
