Mary Elizabeth McDougal of South Bend, Indiana passed away Saturday July 14th. She was born in Evanston, Illinois on October 4th, 1931 to the late Edwin and Margaret Curley of Grand Rapids, Mi. She was preceded in death by her sister Virginia (Ginny) Dunlap, and husband Wilbur (Mac) McDougal.

Mary is survived by her son John Benjamin McDougal, stepdaughters, Linda McDougal of South Bend, Ind. , Rhonda (Tony)Thompson of Ypsilanti, Mi. , stepson Wilbur McDougal Jr. Forestville Md.

, brother Michael (Vicki) Curley of Lansing, Mi. , brother-in-law George Dunlap of Dallas, Tx. , a number of nieces and nephews, and her most precious and revered friends Barb and Rob Mosley of Tampa, Fl.

Mary attended East Grand Rapids High School, and graduated from Saint Mary’s College in 1953 and received her master’s degree in history from Notre Dame in 1966. She was a polio survivor as a teenager. She began a teaching career as Sister M. Vincent Ferrer, Sisters of the Holy Cross.

Mary taught history to high school students at Holy Redeemer, Flint, Michigan and at Bishop Knoll Institute, Hammond, Indiana. After leaving the convent, she completed her years teaching at Saint Joseph High School in South Bend, Indiana. Mary retired from St. Joseph County Public Library, Francis branch in 1996.

On June 17th, 1972, Mary married the very special man in her life Wilbur (Mac) McDougal and had one son, John McDougal. Mary and Mac were long time members of Saint Augustine Catholic church. She was an avid Notre Dame (Irish) fan and enjoyed football weekends, music (playing the piano), cross word puzzles, book club, and an evening glass of wine with friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, July 19th at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 1501 W. Washington Street, South Bend, IN 46628. Friends are welcome to visit the family one hour prior to the church services. Contributions in memory of Mary McDougal may be sent to St. Augustine Church Soup Kitchen, Real Service South Bend, or the Charity of the Donor’s choice.
