Obituary for Mary Gwendolyn Stephens MMary Gwendolyn Sawyer Stephens, 93, of Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, September 14, 2018 at White Oak Estates. Born November 27, 1924 in Greer, SC, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Lillie Johnson Sawyer. She was the widow of the late James Russell Stephens.

Gwen was a member of Cherokee Springs Baptist Church and was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Choir. She was a woman of great faith who was devoted to her church and her family. A wonderful southern cook, she was known for her “famous” chocolate pies.

Gwen was most proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Nama”. Survivors include her daughters, Claudia Stephens Grimm (John) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Jill Stephens Saleeby (Claude) of Spartanburg, SC; six grandchildren, Amy McEvoy (Sean) of Billund, Denmark; Russell Grimm of Hereford, MD; Molly Cooper (Kenny) of Mt.

Pleasant, SC; Alex Saleeby (Brittany) of Spartanburg, SC; Cam Saleeby of Charleston, SC; Caroline Kackley (Jimmy) of Denver, CO; six great grandchildren, Will, Finn and Roan McEvoy, Gwen Cooper, James Kackley, and June Saleeby; sister, Juanita Dillard of Spartanburg, SC; and brother, Dan Sawyer of Spartanburg, SC. She was also predeceased by siblings, Edith Hope, James Sawyer, Jack Sawyer, Jerry Sawyer and Margie Dobbins. Visitation will be 1:00 – 1:45 PM Friday, September 21, 2018 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM at the chapel, conducted by The Rev. Steve Wise. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
