Mary J. Black of Madison passed away on May 2, 2018 at the University Hospital in Geneva, OH, after a brief illness and entered into the loving embrace of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Mary was born in Confluence, PA on March 24, 1947 to Virginia Martin. Survivors are her loving Husband Thomas Black to whom she has been married to since July 14, 1968; her Daughter Michelle (Russell) Black-Couch from Beaver Falls, PA; Son Bryan Black (Kerre Ovens) from Eastlake, OH; Step-father Jim (Barb) Martin from Perry, OH; her two Sisters Teresa (Rick) Brewster and Roxanne (Wayne) Rostocil both from Perry, OH; her aunt Doris Hawker(WV); along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary is preceded in death by her mother Virginia (nee Sands) Martin and her grandparents, Alma & Robert Sands. Mary graduated from Perry High School in 1966 then went on to study cosmetology at Lake Erie School and worked in Lake County as a beautician for 38 years. Mary’s life was a living example of love and loyalty for her family.
Mary was a loving and dedicated wife, a loving and committed mom, eldest sister, aunt and loyal friend. Mary was deeply committed to her faith in Christ, a member of Bible Baptist Church where she served Christ and his community for many years, and prayer was a way of life for her. She took pride and joy in her home where she cooked up amazing meals and tended her lovely gardens.
Mary enjoyed spending her time cooking, gardening, adoring her cats (Kitsu), listening to music, & was an avid reader, especially enjoying mystery novels. Mary will be laid to rest at a family graveside service on Tuesday, May 8th at Madison Memorial Cemetery. A “Celebration of Life” will be announced by the family in the near future where friends & family are invited to join in a time of sharing stories and photos.
In Lieu of flowers, Mary’s family invites you to make a donation to Madison Public Library in honor of one of their most loyal patrons (please note her name on the memo line). Arrangements are being handled by Potti Funeral Home at 2726 Hubbard Road, Madison Ohio.
