Mary Jane Edwards Pettit peacefully passed away in her sleep on September 5, 2018. She was born on Labor Day weekend, September 3rd 1931 to James Edward Edwards and Jane Wilson Taylor at the old Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah. She grew up in Ogden on Chester Street and was the oldest member of the “Chester Street Gang”.
She was the big sister to James Taylor Edwards who is married to Judy Edwards and is residing in St. George, Utah. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Ogden 8th Ward and sang in the choir. She sang in the first presentation of the “Live Christmas Tree” and was the Queen of the Eight Stake Sweetheart Ball.
Mary graduated from Ogden High School in 1949. She fell in love and married Ralph Eric Pettit on October 5th 1949 and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple. Mary was a devoted, nurturing, and loving mother of eight children.
Mary Ann (James) Nelson of Layton, Judy (Glen) Loveland of Kaysville, Christine (Rex) Keeler of Park City, Ralph William Pettit of Clearfield, James Eric (Joan) Pettit of Safford, Arizona, Jonathan Edwards (Sherrie, deceased) Pettit of Roy, Richard Brewster Pettit (deceased) (Amy Elmer) and Vera Jane Wright of Pearl City, Hawaii. What Mary enjoyed most was spending time with her children, 21 grandchildren, 41 great- grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She loved dancing and belonged to the Golden Spike club.
She was also a member of Daughters of Utah Pioneers as well as a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Kaysville 4th ward. She loved camping and sleeping out under the stars, whether it was at girls’ camp, at Yellowstone Park, Anderson Cove, Bear Lake or Lake Powell She loved swimming and hanging out at the beach. She enjoyed going on trips with her family and taking pictures of her family and nature.
She was talented at embroidery, often embroidering pillowcases for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She liked to bake and worked at Winegar’s and Harry’s Thriftway. She also worked at Sno White Cleaners and Faye’s Laundry.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her son Richard Brewster Pettit; daughter in law, Sheri Pettit; grandchildren Summer Pettit and Jason Christopher Turgeon, and great granddaughter Aaliyah Jay Vaetoe. The family wishes to express their great appreciation to Apple Tree Assisted Living in Kaysville and Independent Hospice for their endless love and support for our dear sweet mother. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Kaysville 4th Ward, 875 E. 200 N., Kaysville.
Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Kaysville Mortuary, 400 North Main and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road, Layton.
