Melvin Charles Dean – 6/10/1927 to 9/2/2018 On Sunday, September 2, 2018, our loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather was welcomed into Heaven. Melvin was born to Charles W Dean and Alma Johnson in Salt Lake City, Utah on June 10, 1927. Melvin grew up on a farm in Woodruff, UT.
He was the oldest of four children Kenneth Dean, Janice Romney and Marilyn Blackburn Hayes. He received his high school diploma in May 1945 and had enlisted in the Navy on April 16, 1945. He served on the USS Mountrail until he was discharged on July 16, 1946.
Melvin met his sweetheart, Naola Welch, on a blind date to a Halloween party in Farmington, Utah. They were married on September 17, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple and had seven children, 2 girls and five boys. He worked at HAFB and Rawson’s Garage in Ogden.
Melvin attended Weber College in an apprentice auto and truck repair course. He became Rawson’s Detroit Detail specialist. He applied for a position with Continental Baking Company (Wonder Bread/Hostess Cakes) on December 15, 1955.
After a few months he was put in charge of the eight transports that carried bread and cakes to areas in Idaho and Northern Utah. Dad was on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He was promoted to Fleet Superintendent and by the time he retired in January 1993, he was in charge of 17 transports, 5 autos, and 86 route trucks and vans.
Melvin was also a member of Weber County Sheriff’s Jeep Patrol. They were called out on many search and rescue missions including an Air Force transport plane that went down with engine problems in the middle of winter. Of the 8 men that bailed out, they were able recue five of the men.
Melvin was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served as Ward Finance Clerk in two different wards and in the High Priests Group leadership as the secretary. Melvin and his wife Naola became ordinance workers in the Bountiful Temple for five years.
Dad had survived many surgeries throughout his life including injuries from an auto/pedestrian accident (he was the pedestrian) in 2008 at age 81! He was in intensive care at the University Hospital for weeks until he was released to a rehabilitation center in Bountiful. During that time, his wife Naola never left his side.
Unfortunately we found out that Naola was very sick and had been suffering in silence for months. She was rushed to emergency the first week of October 2008 with a perforated stomach and bowel. This was caused by cancer in the lining of her stomach.
Naola passed away on October 30, 2008 surrounded by Melvin, children, grandchildren and friends. Dad moved into assisted living not long after Naola passed away and was a resident up until his death on September 2, 2018. Melvin is survived by his children Dewayne Dean (Vickie) South Jordan, Utah, Douglas Dean (Kathy) Layton, Utah, Stanley Dean Clearfield, Utah, Wallace Dean (Susan) Renton, Washington, Brenda Worden (Nancy) Layton, Utah, 19 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, with an additional 40 spouses of granddaughters and grandsons and step grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Melvin was preceded in death by his sweet wife Naola, parents Charles and Alma, son, Darrell Dean, daughter, Mary Eileen Reed, grandson, Wallace Bruce Dean, Jr., great grandsons Kelton Blackner and Dylan Bingham, brother, Kenneth Dean, and sister, Marilyn Blackburn Hayes. “I give you a promise to hold; a gift that remains, love that endures through all time never to end. So dry all you sorrows, though bitter they be.
Our parting be a moment that fades like a dream. Soon dear you’ll find me where the stars meet the sea, safe in the whisper that calls you home to me”. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the Bountiful 20th Ward Chapel, 102 East 1400 South.
