Andrew Wayne Almond passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at the age of 69. Born June 25, 1949 in Atlanta, Andrew was the son of the late Hooper Veal Almond and Weir Barrett Almond. He is predeceased by his wife, Kathleen O’Brien Almond, who passed away on September 27, 1999.

A dedicated and loving father to Carolyn Barrett Almond and Ellen Courtney Almond, together he and Kathy took great pride in the family they raised together. He is also survived by his beloved brother Stephen Douglas Almond and his wife Katy of Milwaukee, and his cherished extended family including five nephews, a niece and great-nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Andy as much as he adored them.

As a lifelong Decatur resident, Andrew cultivated longtime friendships throughout the community. A natural athlete, Andrew spent his youth playing baseball and football. Growing up in the shadow of East Lake, Andrew showed great skill on the golf course.

After graduating from Decatur High School in 1967, he attended the University of Georgia. He answered his Nation’s call to service by two years active duty in the US Navy followed by active participation as a Naval Reservist. He had a long career at Atlantic Equipment, retiring in 2013.

Throughout his life he was an avid sports enthusiast with a special affection for the Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Braves. As he travelled life’s path, he touched many people with his kind heart and charming personality. He was a role model of personal character, strength and fortitude inspiring others.

Andrew demonstrated that nothing was insurmountable, making loved ones his priority. He was a man of his word willing to assist those in need. Andrew’s life will be celebrated at a funeral service at A S Turner & Sons at 2773 N. Decatur Road in Decatur on Thursday, October 4 at 1:00 pm with a visitation beginning at 11:00 am.
