Mary Joe Whorton Watson was born June 18, 1927 in Corsicana, Texas and entered into Gods Kingdom on May 23, 2019. Surrounded by family Mary Joe (Mama Jo) died at Lakeland House in Athens. She was born to Robert Whorton and Kate Thomas Whorton in Navarro County.

Mary Joe was a member of the Barry Methodist Church. She loved volunteering at the church. Her main interest was painting for the “Lord Acre” that was held every year.

Her beautiful paintings were always sought after. She had a very giving heart and brought joy and fun to everyone. She loved telling stories about all the interesting people she connected all over the world while working as a telephone operator during World War II.

After the war she married James Edwin Watson. Together they loved working for the Barry Community. She worked with her husband at the Barry Post Office as the Barry rural mail carrier.

She was a devoted wife of 50 years and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James E. Watson; one daughter, Robbie Kathern; parents, Robert and Kate Whorton; Velma Whorton who raised her after her parents death when she was a young child; son-in-law Johnny Mattingly. Mary Jo is survived by one daughter, Kay Mattingly of Malakoff; her grandchildren, Kim Mattingly, Kevin Mattingly and wife Larissa.

She has three great grandchildren Maci, Kaden and Kolten Mattingly. Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 3:00pm Tuesday, May 28th at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Funeral Service will following visitation at 3:00pm in the Chapel at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.
