Mary Triantafyllos April 12, 1932 – September 11, 2018 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Mary Triantafyllos April 12, 1932 – September 11, 2018 Long time resident of Walnut Creek, CA recently of Lafayette, CA Mary Triantafyllos passed away peacefully at home on September 11, 2018 surrounded by her loving husband and children. She was born in Akron, Ohio on April 12, 1932. Mary was 86 years old.

When Mary was ten years old, the family moved to Washington Heights, New York City. Following Mary’s graduation from George Washington High School in 1950, the family moved to Teaneck, NJ. Mary enrolled in New York University, where she earned a BA in English Literature.

In 1953, Mary married George Triantafyllos, whom she had met in New York City and they started their family in Fort Lee, New Jersey moving to Matawan, New Jersey in 1962. The family attended Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Perth Amboy, NJ where Mary was very involved in the Sunday School as a teacher and eventually Superintendent. Mary followed her passion for English Literature, eventually becoming a high school English teacher at Matawan Regional High School.

In 1976, George was transferred to San Francisco, and the family moved to Walnut Creek, California, where Mary supported the successful completion of her sons’ education, the beginning of their careers, marriages, and families. Although Mary lived in California for far more years than she did in New York City, she always maintained her New York identity. Mary enjoyed cooking and entertaining for large groups and regularly hosted holiday meals for the entire extended family.

Mary’s love of design was evident in the beautiful home she created for her family full of her creations. Her talents had few bounds ranging from fine arts to landscaping and horticulture. Mary was predeceased by her parents John and Stella and brother Nick.

Mary is survived by her husband of 65 years, George, sons Dino, John, Nick, daughter in-laws Laura and Lisa, grandchildren Alexander, Evan, and Grace, brother Michael, and several nieces and nephews. A Trisagion service will be held on Thursday, September 20th at 7:00PM. The funeral will be held on Friday, September 21st at 10:30 AM.

All services will be held at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension, 4700 Lincoln Avenue, Oakland, CA, 94602. Internment Oakmont Memorial Park, Lafayette, CA. For further information please contact Harry W. Greer, Funeral Director (FDR-745) .
