Mary’s Obituary Mary Jo Clanton Warren, was born on a farm West of Chelsea. She was the fourth daughter to Jess and Velma (Short) Clanton. Mary grew up and attended school in Chelsea, graduating with the class of 1946.

She then moved to Tulsa to attend beauty college. Mary began working in Claremore at Elrod’s Beauty Shops, then moved to Vinita and worked at Erma’s Beauty Shop where she met her husband, Leon Warren. The couple married in Stockton, Missouri in 1947.

The couple made Vinita their first home followed by Tulsa. In 1952, Uncle Sam needed a few good men. Mary went to San Clemente, California and worked at Camp Pendleton’s PX tent camp until Leon went to Korea and Japan.

After Leon was discharged from active duty, they returned to Tulsa and purchased a home. Thier first son Steven was born in 1960 and Mark joined the family in 1963. The family moved to Verdigris and built a home.

Mary was a long time member of the Blue Starr Church of Christ. She taught a Sunday school class of fourth graders (in addition to other classes) for thirty years. .

She was a long time employee of Rural Water District #5. Mary was a Rogers County literacy teacher and her family helped start the Boy Scout troops at Verdigris where she was a Cub Scout Den Mother. Surviving family members include her husband Leon; her son, Steven and wife Amy; two sisters: Jane Harrell of Coweta and Ruth Carter of Claremore; her brother, Johnnie Clanton and his wife, Janet of Copan; her grandchildren: Johnathan, Elizabeth, Michael, and Ben of Athens, TX, Emma and Alli of Palm Harbor, FL; and one great grand child, Briella Warren of Athens, TX.
