VERNON – Mr. Melvin M. Olin, age 93, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2019, two days before his 94th birthday, with his loving family by his side. Born in Boonville on March 16, 1925, Melvin was the son of the late Millard and Rosa (Morrison) Olin. He was raised and educated in Boonville.
A member of the Greatest Generation and a proud veteran of the United States Navy, Melvin honorably served his country from 1943-1946 during World War II stationed in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations. At one time, he was married to the former Dorothy Conover and to that came the blessing of two children. He later shared a 55-year relationship with Joyce Lerch, a union that was blessed in marriage when they took their nuptial vows on December 31, 1996.
They loved being together, exploring the natural world, and sharing a closeness of mind and heart. Melvin worked as a tractor-trailer operator and an auto repair man. He was later employed by Rome Cable as a Machine Operator and a Tool & Dye fabricator, the position from which he retired.
A man of high standards, Melvin was most passionate about his job. He was a hard worker and a man who finished what he started. A self-taught jack-of-all-trades, he was intuitive, talented, and had an inherent knowledge about how things worked.
During his younger years, he found pleasure in traveling, fishing, and snowmobiling. And because he was so agile, coordinated, and light on his feet, he was a great rollerskater! Melvin was a man of faith.
He gave thanks for all the blessings in his life, and he always said grace before a meal. He was a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church. Melvin is survived by his wife, Joyce; his daughter and son-in-law, Geraldine and George Walters; and his daughter-in-law, Toni Olin.
He held close to his heart the memory of his son James M. Olin who passed away on October 12, 2012. He also leaves his four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Melvin was born one of ten children and is survived by his sisters, Susan Cook, and Roxanne VanDuzer; and his brother, Vernon Olin.
His remaining six siblings preceded him. He will be remembered by his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and in-laws, Judy and Charles Lovenguth, Rosemary and Jerry Summers, Diane and Frank Raspante, Patricia and Carlos Matos, Pearl and Brian Savicki, Rickie Lerch, Anna Kimball, Rena and Dean Boardman, and Linda and Angelo Mazzolo. Joyce wishes to thank the family for their support, with special mention of Geraldine and George, Lorraine, Linda, Pearl and Brian, as well as Pastor Paul Bannister.
