Obituary of Michael Edward VanAlst Michael Edward VanAlst, 72, of Esville, our outgoing, joking, loving, and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend was born into eternal life on the morning of Tuesday, November 13, 2018 with his family by his side. Mike was born in Bay City on October 5, 1946, the son of the late Peter and Patricia (Meldrum) VanAlst. Mike graduated from St. John’s High School and went on to answer the call of his country and serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era.
On October 8, 1966, Mike married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, the former Jeanette VanOchten. Together they shared over 52 years, three wonderful children, and countless memories. Mike was a lifelong parishioner at St. Jude Thaddeus Parish (St. John the Evangelist Church) and retired from Consumers Energy.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #2740, the AMVETs, Post #22, and the Bay City Muskrat Club. Mike enjoyed his Wednesday morning coffee at the Silver Palace, tending to his lawn, and playing cards – especially Euchre. Those who knew Mike know, “His family was his greatest joy”.
He will be deeply missed, but lovingly remembered for generations to come. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Jeanette; their children, Julie (Matt) Williams, John (Stacy) VanAlst, and Matthew (Amelia) Krysinski. Mike was the most loving grandpa of Jack and Monica, and great-grandpa of Mia.
He also leaves, his siblings, Jerry (Roberta) VanAlst, Janet Haney, and Jackie DeWyse; sisters-in-law, Donna VanAlst, Joan (Fred) Dechow, and Janet (Gary) Senk; brother-in-law, John Smith, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents, Mike was welcomed home to heaven by his grandsons, Aaron and Alec; brothers, Jim VanAlst, Bob (Ginny) VanAlst, and Ted (Maureen) VanAlst; sister, Mary Jo (Glen) Mularz; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bert and Ann (Eurich) VanOchten; brother-in-law, Earle Haney, and sister-in-law, Nancy (Ed) Krysinski. Mike’s family will be present to receive visitors on Friday, November 16, 2018 from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 6:00 PM Vigil for Mike at Skorupski Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 955 N. Pine Rd.
, Hampton Twp. On Saturday, November 17, 2018, Mike will be taken to St. Jude Thaddeus Parish (St. John the Evangelist Church), 614 Pine St., Esville, where visiting will continue from 9:00 AM until the time of his 10:00 AM Funeral Liturgy. The Rite of Committal will be held privately in Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Brian’s House, or AMVETs Post #22.
