Obituary for Milford Stanely “Stan” Giffin Milford Stanley “Stan” Giffin, 90, of Pomona, KS passed away Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Brookside Retirement Community in Overbrook, KS. He was born August 28, 1928 in Wichita, KS the son of Milford Elmer Giffin and Lucille Anna (Hoover) Giffin. He grew up in Wichita and attended schools there before moving to Hoisington, KS where he graduated from the Hoisington High School in 1946.

At an early age, Stan learned to fly airplanes with his Father from the Hoisington, KS Airport. Stan was united in marriage to Virginia Ruth Lewis on January 1, 1945 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. They shared seventy years of marriage before the death of his wife on March 12, 2015.

Stan served our country in the United States Air Force. He was a Trainer Pilot who was stationed at the Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier Parish, Louisiana from 1949 to 1950. After his service, he worked for the Cessna Aircraft Company and later for the Boeing Aircraft Manufacturing Company both in Wichita, KS as an Mechanical Engineer.

From 1958 to 1988 Stan lived in Colorado in the communities of Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins. He worked for the Ball Brothers Research Corporation where he helped with the OSO-1 (Orbiting Solar Observatory) satellite, designed and built for NASA. He also tested avionics and aerospace systems for NASA’s Mercury and Gemini Programs.

He retired from Ball in 1988. Stan owned and operated a trucking company for ten years traveling from coast to coast. He enjoyed restoring old cars and trucks; golfing; riding and caring for his horses Easy and Shiloh; and spending time with his family, especially going to the kids’ sporting events.

Mr. Giffin was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; sister, Gyneth Giffin; and brother-in-law, Jim Kerns. He is survived by two sons, “Rick” Richard Lynn Giffin and his wife, Pamela of Arboles, CO and Kim Allen Giffin and his wife, Elizabeth of Pomona, KS; sister, Francis Lee Michel of Sykesville, MD; six grandchildren, Michael Shawn Giffin and his wife, Jerri of Moore Park, CA, Morning Brook Westebrook and her husband, Clint of South Park, CO, Marisa Emerald Giffin of Wichita, KS, Amanda Sue Reed and her husband, Chase of Baltimore, MD, Alissa Smith and her husband, Shandon of Pomona, KS, and Megan Giffin of Fargo, ND. Graveside services and Interment will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona, KS.
