Obituary for Newty Marian Chambers ROCKLAND – Newty M. Chambers, 92, widow of LeRoy ‘Roy’ Chambers, died Thursday, May 24, 2018 at her home. Born in Monticello, Maine, May 27, 1925, she was the daughter of Allen McLean and Sadie Syphers McLean. She was brought up in Houlton by her paternal grandparents, Anthony and Alice McLean and educated in the school system there.
In 1944, she graduated from Houlton High School and did secretarial work for the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad for a couple of years. After the family moved to Rockland in 1954, she was employed at the Strand Theater for ten years, and for nearly 24 years at GTE Sylvania in Waldoboro as an accounting clerk and also in Human Res. After her husband passed away in 1990, she continued to live in the home they purchased in 1960 overlooking the ocean.
As a widow, she had her first dog, Shelby and called her ‘my best pal’. After Shelby passed away, little Emmi, a beagle, came to enrich her life, as Shelby had done. Emmi passed away in 2017.
Flowers were another great love. She enjoyed making her yard ‘look nice’, as she called it and would tell you that both flowers and the ocean were ‘good for the soul’. Being interested in what was ‘going on’, you might see Newty expressing her views at a City Council meeting or in a letter.
She like being king to folks but never wanted fanfare. Spending time with friends for morning ‘coffee’, luncheon, or perhaps a day trip were special to her. Each December Newty planned a sit-down dinner in her home with an exchange of gifts; good fun, she would say.
Also she dabbled in poetry, sketching, and working with embossing stamps. She loved her family and is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Demmons and her husband Gary; two grandsons, David, his wife Lisa, and children, Michael, Brittany, Matthew and Madelyn; Michael, his wife Marina and their daughters, Madison, MeKenna, Dakotah, Angelina, Sofia (She and McKenna shared the same birthday); three step-grandchildren, Marcia, Melinda and Craig. Newty is predeceased by her sister, Irene Smith, half-brother, Asa Harvey, Jr. and his wife, Betty and step-son Rodney who died in 2006.
She has many cousins as well as several nieces and nephews who survive her. A graveside service at Sea View Cemetery, Glen Cove on Warrenton Street (across from the Samoset) will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, June 15, 2018. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County P. O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841, to help abused and neglected animals turned into this facility.
