Nora May (Rose) McCarty was born on April 5, 1922 in Duluth, Minnesota to James Arthur and Mary Catherine (Rice) Rose. She graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis in 1940 and went to St. Cloud State for Teacher’s College. Nora taught at Pemberton, in Minneapolis, and Two Harbors.

Nora was united in marriage to Jerome William McCarthy on February 12, 1943 in Urbana, Illinois. The couple lived in New York and Norfolk, Virginia while Jerome was in the Navy. They then moved to Glenwood where they were blessed with two children.

Nora stayed home with them until they were in grade school and then she went back to teaching in Villard, where she taught for 35 years. Nora was awarded three Fellowships from the National Science Foundation to study at various universities. She also belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma, a sorority for women educators.

Nora liked to sew, knit, paint, read and travel. She traveled all over the world with her favorites being Africa, China, Egypt and the U.S. Nora died on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the age of ninety-six years. She is survived by her son, William (Diana) McCarty of Buffalo, MN; daughter, Patricia McCarty of Alexandria; grandchildren, Jonathan McCarty of Buffalo, Kristen McCarty of Buffalo, and Michael (Emilia Molle) of New Richmond, WI; sister-in-law, Jeane Rose Cary of Ripon, CA; and niece, Maureen (Peter Keller) Rose of Falls Church, VA.

Nora is preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary; husband of 47 years, Jerome; brother, William Arthur; sister, Margery Rose; and niece, Shannon Elaine Rose. Interment was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
