Obituary for Norma V. Fezza Norma (D’Angelo) Fezza, age 89, of Hamden passed away peacefully on March 23, 2018. She was born in New Haven on June 11, 1928, to the late Frank and Regina D’Angelo. Norma was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Michael Lawrence Fezza.
She leaves her daughters, Marilyn (John) Elsworth, and Michele (John) Hughes, son Dr. John (Heidi) Fezza and grandchildren James and Christopher Elsworth, Jenevieve and Michael Hughes, Blake, Reed and Tyler Fezza. She was predeceased by her beloved brother Robert (Mary) D’Angelo. As a young girl she had a creative nature, and talent as an artist and pianist.
Her love of adventure and the outdoors led her to girl scout camp and later on to become Sea Scout. After high school, she became a certified radiology technician and married her Hillhouse sweetheart, Michael Fezza. They later moved to New York for Michael’s medical training, where she broke stereotype working as a bank teller in the city.
Norma and Michael returned to Connecticut to build a medical practice and start their family. Norma shared her love of painting and sculpting, with the community and as a docent at Yale Art Gallery. She expanded her artistic talent to the design, remodeling and landscaping of family homes through the years.
Her love of the outdoors, competitive spirit and enthusiasm for games drew her to tennis and golf played with family and friends. As her children grew, Norma returned to school to earn a Master’s degree in art and psychology. She was ahead of the times when she developed a program at the YMCA for young girls to foster confidence and develop self-esteem.
Most of all though, she cherished her role as wife, mother and grandmother. She showered her family and those around her with love and constant encouragement. Norma will not only be remembered for her unique spirit and many talents, but also for her kindness and generosity and for helping family and friends in time of need.
She had a wonderful zest for life and will be greatly missed. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 21 at l0:00 am at St. Rita Church in Hamden, followed by a private Burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, on-line at stjude.org (Ways to Give, Memorials and Dedications) or mailed to 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
