Orlando Lopes Rafael May 18, 1933 – February 22, 2019 Share this obituary View/Sign Guest Book NAUGATUCK ORLANDO RAFAEL “Loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle” Orlando Lopes Rafael age 85 of Naugatuck, passed away peacefully February 22, 2019 in the Vitas Unit at Saint Mary’s Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Maria Rosa (Marcello) Rafael. Orlando was born May 18, 1933 in Gouveia, Portugal, a son of the late Armando and Beatriz (Almeida) Rafael.

He was educated in Portugal. After immigrating to the United States in 1956, Orlando worked as an accountant for Brito’s Plumbing, as a machinist at Scovill Manufacturing / Century Brass, and also worked in the cottages at Southbury Training School before retiring in 1990. After retiring, Orlando and Maria spent summers at their home in Gouveia.

He was an active and instrumental member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, from its beginning in the basement of Saint Francis Xavier Church and at Saint Francis of Assisi Church in Naugatuck to its present-day location on Baldwin Street, having worked with Fr. Nelson Ribeiro for many years who was his Pastor and his friend. Orlando was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, had a great sence of humor, and was a kind man who never had a bad word to say about anyone.

He found his greatest joy spending time with his family and friends. Besides his loving wife of 62 years of Naugatuck, he leaves his son Dr. Armando Rafael O.D. and his wife Lorie of Naugatuck, his daughter Ana Paula Chessic and her husband Darrin of Naugatuck, his grandchildren Rebekah Rose Chessic, Lauren Margaret Chessic, Arminda Marie Rafael, Justin and Elijah Ramos, and his great-grandchildren Chase Michael Manning, and Carter Zyne Manning, a niece Helena Klinowski and a nephew George Guerreiro. He was predeceased by a great grandson Jaxon Manning and a sister Armanda Guerreiro and her husband Julio Guerreiro.

Arrangements: Funeral Tuesday February 26, 2019 at 10 a.m. directly at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin Street. Burial will follow at Saint James Cemetery in Naugatuck.
