Phyllis Adele Schwetz (Schneller) was chosen to grace God’s heavenly garden on Nov. 9, 2018. She was born in 1928 to Stanley and Bessie Schneller in Gary, IN.

Her love of gardening was inspired by her mother and was passed on to her own daughters, Jacqueline, Carole and Linda. Phyllis and John wed when she was barely 20 years old. While raising her family in Portage, MI, she acquired a degree in education from WMU.

Moving to Ludington in 1968, her first teaching job was at Riverton Elementary. She retired after teaching English as a Second Language at Husson College in Bangor, ME. She especially enjoyed inviting the international students for dinner and learning about foreign cuisines.

Phyllis was always up for adventure. She loved camping with family and friends, sailing the Great Lakes, traveling in Europe and even ventured to Honduras in 1984 to visit Linda in the Peace Corps. Retiring in 1991, Phyl and John returned to Michigan and restored an old farmhouse near Hart, where the family loved to visit.

She enjoyed maintaining her many gardens and walking the fields to pick asparagus and blackberries. Phyllis was always active in the United Methodist Church, the last one being Centenary in Pentwater. She often donated pies and became known as the pie lady.

She and John were among founding members of the 29ers, a traveling volunteer group that worked on projects across the US. Phyllis was predeceased by John earlier this year after nearly 70 years of marriage. She will be dearly missed by her family; Jacqueline (Vern), Carole (Jeff), Linda, and all of her grandsons and their wives and her great-grandchildren.
