Rachel Estella Strole Arnette Matthews, age 94 of Chadbourn, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center in Whiteville, surrounded by her beloved family. Born in Whiteville in 1924, she was the daughter of the late Glenn Franklin Strole and Inez Grace Wilkes Strole. Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her spouses, Evander Charles Arnette and Dr. George Matthews and her siblings, Edward Strole, Phillip Strole and Jean Holland.

Mrs. Matthews was an educator in the Public-School System for 25 years, at Chadbourn Elementary School. She was a faithful member of Piney Forest Baptist Church and served in various roles as pianist, organist, and choir director for over 40 years. Funeral Services commemorating Mrs. Matthews life will be conducted on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. in the Piney Forest Baptist Church.

Reverend Willard McPherson and Reverend Jimmy Strole will officiate the service. Interment will follow in the Piney Forest Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be conducted from 6:00-8:00 Tuesday evening, at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn.

To cherish her memory, Mrs. Matthews leaves behind four children, Gail A. McCann and husband Mark of Waxhaw, Dr. Charles Arnette and wife Paulette of North Myrtle Beach, Helen A. Waddell and husband Larry of Fair Bluff, and Glen Franklin Arnette and wife Terri of Raleigh; sisters-in-law, Glenda Norman Strole of Laurinburg, Miriam Potter of North Myrtle Beach, Syble Morales of Baltimore, Maryland; nine grandchildren, Michele Stadler and husband William, Dr. Christopher McCann and wife Vanessa, Toni Bologna and husband Joe, Nicole Shelley and husband Matt, Gretchen Baker, Jamie Rooks, Courtney Waddell, Evan Arnette, Brennen Arnette and 19 Great-grandchildren. A service of Worthington Funeral Home, Chadbourn.
