Obituary for Mrs. Ramona Allman Baker Ramona Allman Baker, age 86, decided to move on after some common age-related complications, on July 5th, 2018. She said she had a good run and felt truly blessed. She was born on September 8, 1931 in Sutton, West Virginia to Raymond and Leo Allman where she grew up.
She attended Marshall University (Go Thundering Herd) where she received a 2-year business degree. She always said the best days of her life were spent in college. Unfortunately, she didn’t divulge any details and since social media and cell phones had not been invented, we can only imagine.
She went on to the Gregg Shorthand School in Chicago and became a court reporter for the 14th judicial circuit of West Virginia for a few years. Ramona met her husband John “Preach” Baker on a blind date on April 1st, and they both maintained there were fooled. They were married for 59-years.
When asked on her 50th anniversary the secret to a long marriage, she replied, “When you make your bed, you have to lie in it”. She left the job market to raise a family. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker who kept things immaculately clean.
Ramona had a variety of interests throughout her life that included reading, bowling, water skiing, golf and cooking. She belonged to several clubs. She eventually ended up a bridge addict.
She and Preach lived most of their lives in Summersville, West Virginia. Ramona belonged to the Summersville Memorial United Methodist Church where she volunteered a lot of her time on committees and cooking dinners. She and Preach moved to Cookeville, Tennessee in 2011 where they remained for the rest of their lives.
She was a member of the Cookeville First United Methodist Church and Dorcas Circle. She was preceded in death by her husband, her brother Jack, and her grandson John Chris Baker. She is survived by her son John (Lorrie) Baker, and her daughters Paula (Keith) Lilly, and Laura (Ralph) McCall.
She is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Ramona has chosen cremation along with a small family gathering at her place of interment.
