Catholic priest for the Diocese of Saginaw passed away Friday, February 15, 2019 at St. Francis Home. Age 88 years. The son of the late Anthony and Gladys (Jarolewski) Skornia, Bernard was born August 14, 1930 in Bay City, Michigan.

He studied at St. Mary’s of Orchard Lake and St. John’s Seminary where he received his Masters of Divinity. Fr. Ben was ordained into the priesthood on June 1, 1957 by the Most Reverend Stephen Woznicki at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Bay City.

His assignments included Sacred Heart Church in Oscoda, St. Mary’s Church in Alpena, St. Andrew Church in Saginaw, Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Sebewaing, St. John the Evangelist Church in Ubly, St. Casimir Church in Saginaw, Sacred Heart Church in Kawkawlin, St. Francis Borgia Church in Pigeon and St. Matthew Church in Zilwaukee. He also served the Diocese of Saginaw as a member of the Finance Board and Personnel Board. Fr.

Ben obtained Senior Priest Status on July 12, 1995. Fr. Ben was preceded in death by six brothers, Fr.

Leo, Edwin, Albin, Henry, Aloysius and Richard Skornia. Surviving are several nieces, nephews and many dear friends including his care giver, Catherine Lopez. Fr.

Ben’s family extends their gratitude and appreciation to St. Francis Home for their loving and compassionate care. Funeral Liturgy will take place 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 22, 2019 at Prince of Peace Parish-Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2510 S. Fraser Road in Kawkawlin, Michigan. The Most Reverend Walter A. Hurley, Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese of Saginaw, will preside.

Homilist will be Rev. Fr. Thomas J. Fleming.

Interment will take place in the Priest’s Section of St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery in Bay City. Fr. Ben will lie in state at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Kawkawlin on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass.

A Vigil Service will take place 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the church. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Diocese of Saginaw Priest’s Retirement Fund. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Rev.
