Obituary for Rev. Vilma Horne Rev. Vilma Jackson Horne, 90, widow of the Rev.

Charles B. Horne, passed away Friday, September 14, 2018, at NHC Healthcare. Born November 13, 1927, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Frank M. “Dick” Jackson and the late Annie Mae Stafford Jackson. She graduated from Edmunds High School in 1945 and attended Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, TN.

She graduated from the S.C. District Ministerial Course of Studies. She was called to preach at an early age and co-pastored faithfully with her late husband for 59 years. At the age of 19, she was voted Nazarene District Young People’s President, and served on the Young Peoples’ Council, District Sunday School Board and District Missionary Council as Treasurer in Georgia.

As a teenager, she raised $600. 00 in 1947 to buy a tent for revivals. Five area churches, including Calvary Church of the Nazarene, Bishopville Nazarene Church, Ashwood Nazarene Church, Florence Nazarene Church, and Wise Drive Church of the Nazarene were organized as a result of these tent revivals.

Among other positions filled, she was also a Sunday School teacher and Choir Director for many years. She served at Tuomey Hospital as a volunteer Chaplain. She was ordained in the Church of the Nazarene in 2013 at the age of 85.

She never met a stranger and enjoyed the work of the ministry. She is survived by her niece, Jackie Cooper; and great-nieces, Elizabeth Callahan and Diane McGrath (Matthew); great-great nephew, Landon; and great-great-niece, Abigail. She was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Jack Ginsberg of Mt.

Pleasant; and three sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law of Georgia. Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Friday at Sumter First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Greg Pressley, Dr. Jim Thrower, and Rev Sammy Geddings.

Burial will be in the Calvary Nazarene Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of Ron Whetsel’s Sunday School Class and Paul Aufschlager Sunday School Class. Honorary pallbearers will be all ministers and wives, and Chaplains of Palmetto Health Tuomey.

The family will receive friends 1:30 P.M. to 2 P.M. Friday at Sumter First Church of the Nazarene. Memorials may be made to Sumter First Church of the Nazarene, New Sanctuary Fund, 3700 Patriot Parkway, Sumter, SC 29154. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
