Obituary for Reverend Monsignor George Joseph Schlegel Reverend Monsignor George Joseph Schlegel died on April 12, 2018 at the Ohio State University Ross Heart Hospital. The son of George and Elizabeth (McDonald) Schlegel, he was born on February 26, 1940 in Columbus, Ohio, and was baptized on March 17, 1940 at Saint Aloysius Church (Columbus). He graduated from Saint Aloysius Elementary School in 1954 and in 1958 graduated from Saint Charles Preparatory School (Columbus).

He received his college and philosophy degrees in 1960 and 1962, respectively, from the former Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary (Columbus) and in 1966 completed his theological studies at Mount Saint Mary’s of the West Seminary (Cincinnati). Msgr. Schlegel also studied Latin at Ohio State University and Xavier University during the summer months between 1959 and 1965.

He was ordained a priest at Saint Joseph Cathedral on May 28, 1966 by Bishop John J. Carberry. During his priestly ministry and service to Christ, His Church and His people, Msgr. Schlegel served in a number of parishes, including: associate pastor, Saint Francis DeSales (Newark); associate pastor, Saint Mary (Lancaster); associate pastor, Saint Mary (Marion); pastor, Saint Paul (Westerville); pastor, Saint Joan of Arc (Powell); and pastor, Sacred Heart (New Philadelphia).

He also served as an instructor at Newark Catholic High School and Bishop Fenwick High School (Lancaster), in addition to Judge in the Diocesan Tribunal and his service to a number of diocesan boards and committees. Msgr. Schlegel retired in 2010 but remained very active in his retirement assisting primarily at Saint Joan of Arc Parish (Powell), but also at a number of other parishes in the Diocese.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by brother, Edward Schlegel. Survived by sisters, Betty Thurn & Theresa (Bill) Overholser; brother, Donald (Loretta) Schlegel; nieces & nephews, Martin (Nina) Thurn, Ashburn, VA, Trinidad, Alisa (Justin) Beal, Widomar, CA, Kate (Edgar) Ortega, Brooklyn, NY, Claire Schlegel, Jersey City, NJ, Nicholas (Davi Ann) Thurn, Clement Thurn, Sarah Overholser, Lynn Overholser, Lydia (Michael) Curtis, and Emily (Adam) Daron, all of Columbus; eleven great-nieces & great-nephews. Calling hours will take place at Saint Joan of Arc Parish, 10700 Liberty Road, Powell, on Monday, April 16, 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., concluding with a prayer service.

Visitation will resume Tuesday, April 17, 11:30 a.m. at Saint Joan of Arc, continuing until the Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 p.m.; Bishop Frederick Campbell will celebrate the Mass, concelebrated by Bishop James Griffin and priests of the Diocese; burial will immediately follow at Resurrection Cemetery (Lewis Center).
