Shaddick March 07, 1942 – January 08, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Sympathy Card Robert A Shaddick, 76, of Mendota passed away January 8, 2019 at Mendota Lutheran Home surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 am at St John’s Lutheran Church, Mendota with Rev. Susan Presley officiating.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation will be Sunday from 1-4 p.m. at Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Bob was born March 7, 1942 in Mendota to Lewis and Frieda (Radtke) Shaddick.
He was proud to say he grew up in the great little village of Paw Paw, where he graduated from Paw Paw High School in 1959. He continued his education at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, MO while on a baseball scholarship. During his time there, he also joined Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
After his college days, he entered into the US Army and spent most of his time at Fort Riley in Kansas. He also continued to play ball for a number of years. He married JoAnn Long on September 30, 1967 at Holy Cross Church in Mendota.
They celebrated 51 years together with parties on many of the major milestone anniversaries. He worked for a number of years at Conkey’s in Mendota and sold insurance for Leffelman & Associates. Bob was able to round out his working career as a salesman for Black Bros.
Co, where he traveled 9 states and was able to do his favorite thing – talk to people. He retired in 2008 after 19 years with the company. He was a 50-plus year member of the Mendota Elks Lodge 1212, where he also served as Exalted Ruler.
He was a member of the Mendota Sportsmen’s Club and Ducks Unlimited. In his earlier years, Bob volunteered his time as a coach for the Mendota Little League and as an Assistant Cubmaster for the Cub Scouts in Mendota. He spent many years hunting various kinds of wildlife and had plenty of stories to tell.
He enjoyed golfing at Shady Oaks in Sublette, where he logged more than 35 years golfing with his favorite band of brothers: Gene Schinzer, Larry Leffelman, and Gary Zinke. He loved his time at Shady Oaks so much, he was even hired during his retirement to mow the course. During the winter months when it was too cold to golf, he was usually found playing cards at any number of cabins in the Sublette area.
People also recognize him as the guy who loved to spin a yarn in the many watering holes around the Greater West Brooklyn area. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his three grandchildren and taking them out to dinner. Survivors include his wife, JoAnn of Mendota; son Christopher (Gwen) of Poplar Grove; daughter Amy of Mendota; grandchildren Brady, Cassidy & Logan; brother Randy (Dawn) Shaddick of Amboy; sister Janet Wehmeyer of Oregon; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ronald, sister Joyce, and brother-in-law Joe Wehmeyer. Memorials may be directed to Mendota Area Senior Services or St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital.
