Robert G. Covert, Sr., age 96, St. Rt. 46 South, Jefferson, died Friday afternoon at Geneva Village Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center after being in nursing homes the past seven years. He was born November 16, 1922 in Grove City, PA, the son of Grover & Vera (Waldo) Covert and has resided in Ashtabula County most of his life.
Mr. Covert was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving in World War II as a machinist MMIII, stationed on the LST-557 landing ship, he was assigned to the South Pacific, he participated in operations in Palau Islands, Leyte & Lingayen gulfs, the liberation of the Philippine Islands and Okinawa. He had more than 70 years with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union #673. Besides the union, Mr. Covert was a charter member of People’s Church in Geneva where he served as an elder, usher, Sunday school teacher and treasurer, then a member of the Jefferson Church of the Nazarene the past 20 years, serving as treasurer.
He was a kink hearted, gentle man of strong faith who loved his family immensely. Mr. Covert was a member of the Ohio Last Amphets. He enjoyed working on wood crafts with his wife, cutting out projects for her to paint.
He is survived by four children, Dennis (Joanne) Covert of Ashtabula, Paul (Rosalyn) Covert of Oscoda, MI, Robert Covert, Jr. of Geneva and Nancy (Ray) Newhart of Jefferson and Linda (Fred) Bishop of Ontario, CA whom he accepted as his own daughter; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and a sister, Shirley Patch of Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, whom he married on 1/10/46 in Conneaut; a daughter, Deborah Adams and four sisters, Alice Graham & Gladys Bruinsma, Geraldine Bruinsma & Doris Girouard. The family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation to Harbor Light Hospice and the Harbor Light Hospice and the Geneva Village Skilled Nursing Home for the care and concern of Mr. Covert.
Services will be held Saturday at 12:00 PM at the Jefferson Church of the Nazarene, 55 E. Satin St., Jefferson, with Pastor Rich Boll of the Lake Erie Church of God in Perry officiating. Services will begin with American Legion Post #112 of Madison rendering military honors. Visitation will be Saturday at the church from 11:00AM-12:00PM.
A luncheon will be at the church following the services. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Harbor Light Hospice, 4531 Belmont Ave.
