Robert Howard McSherry died at his home, 208 S. Woodberry Ave. , Danville, VA, surrounded by family and friends on May 2019, following a four year decline in health. He was born on November 21st, 1945 in Portsmouth, VA, son of Clyde Owen and Audrey Rudder McSherry.

He was raised in Milton, N.C. and graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School in Yanceyville, N.C. While attending Danville Community College, Robert worked at Dan River Mills. In 1966 he joined the United States Air Force and served four years, including one tour of duty in Vietnam. After an honorable discharge from the USAF, he returned home and worked for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company for over 29 years prior to retiring due to health issues.

Robert was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church where he served on the Board of Deacons and sang in the choir. He was also an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 354 from 1982 to 1986 and completed Woodbadge leadership training. Robert was married to Melinda Gayle Olive of Yanceyville, N.C. in May of 1966.

They made their family home in Danville, VA. He was predeceased by his parents Clyde Owen and Audrey McSherry. He is survived by his wife, Melinda, and son, Mark (Wolf), both of Danville, a grandson Jason Cisneros-McSherry of Denver, Colorado, a sister, Susanne McSherry Rea and brother-in-law George, a brother Jackson McSherry and sister-in-law, Glenda, sister-in-law Nancy Olive, 11 nieces and nephews and 16 great nieces and nephews whom he loved and was loved by, and friends whose love and support we appreciate greatly.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Reverend Freddy Vicks officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and at other times will be at the residence. Interment will take place at Lebanon Christian Church in Semora, N.C. immediately following the service.

The McSherry’s would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his caregivers, Lisa, Diana, Tammy and LaToya, and to the staff at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation 1, the Veterans Affairs Medical System, Piedmont Infusion Clinic, Liberty Hospice, and the Sovah Advanced Wound Care Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is serving the McSherry family.
